Minecraft 1.9, titled "Combat Update" was released on February 29, 2016 for Java Edition. The Combat Update completely overhauled the combat system, adding shields, dual wielding and lingering potions, and also included the controversial attack cooldown mechanic and armor strength nerf - forever changing the PvP & PvE aspects of Minecraft. Aside from these combat changes, the update also included lots of changes related to the End, such as generating Outer Islands & End Cities, adding the Shulker, Elytra, Purpur block, and a way to restart the Ender Dragon boss fight.
